Can balcony solar kickstart the next "trillion-dollar market"?

Par YAPING ZHAO November 13th, 2025 56 vues

According to data recently released by the German Solar Association (BSW-Solar), Germany saw the addition of 1.05 million new photovoltaic (PV) systems in 2024, with 435,000 of these being balcony PV systems. This means that at least two out of every five PV systems installed were balcony PV systems. Their installed capacity grew by 100%, a growth rate that far exceeds other PV types. This rapid growth stems from the persistently high electricity prices in Europe.

Taking Germany as an example, in the second half of 2023, the cost of residential electricity reached 0.4162 euros/kWh (including taxes and fees), ranking among the highest in the EU. Against this backdrop, balcony PV systems offer significant economic advantages: a complete basic system package starts at just 600 euros (approximately 4660 RMB). A typical configuration of two 500W modules generates 5 kWh per day, totaling 1500 kWh annually. Based on Germany's electricity cost of approximately 42 euro cents (0.4162 euros) per kilowatt-hour, a balcony PV system can save 228.91 euros per year. At this rate, the system can essentially pay for itself and become profitable within a few years.

Furthermore, the extreme ease of installation of balcony PV systems is another crucial factor contributing to their popularity in the market. Users only need to fix the PV modules to their balcony or terrace, connect the AC cable to a household socket, and they can easily start using green electricity. A typical balcony PV system usually consists of 1-4 PV modules, a microinverter, mounting brackets, and cables. It can be flexibly adapted to various building types such as apartments, villas, and self-built rural homes, significantly expanding the application scope of clean energy.

The Foundation of the NEP Brand – Microinverters

NEP boasts a comprehensive product matrix of microinverters, covering various models ranging from 300 to 2250W, 1-to-1 to 1-to-4 configurations, and grid-tied voltages of 110Vac and 220Vac, adapting to household PV application scenarios in multiple regions worldwide. Possessing independent patents and intellectual property rights in the US, China, and other countries, NEP's microinverters achieve a CEC weighted efficiency of 96.5% under rigorous wide-voltage testing, and feature an ultra-wide MPPT tracking range of 22-55V, allowing them to adapt to complex lighting conditions. Currently, NEP microinverter products have obtained product certification in over 50 countries and regions. Notably, they have received full series product certification in the highly demanding US and European markets, and NEP was also one of the earliest microinverter brands to obtain grid-connection approval in Japan.

Pioneers in Distributed PV System Stability – Micro-Storage Inverters

With the popularization of distributed PV, energy loss in off-grid systems and instability in grid-tied systems have become pain points in the development of the PV industry. NEP has innovated upon its microinverter technology to introduce a micro-storage inverter system. This system can convert and store surplus electrical energy from the PV system, releasing it during peak demand. This improves the energy utilization efficiency of distributed PV systems and can also provide timely power supplementation during grid fluctuations or failures, ensuring the continuity and reliability of power supply, and enhancing the stability of distributed PV integration into the grid. This technology represents a major breakthrough in the field of PV energy storage and a milestone in distributed energy management technology. (Image: NEP official website)

Guardians of PV System Safety – Rapid Shutdown Devices

A PV Rapid Shutdown Device (RSD) is a device installed between PV modules that can quickly cut off the high-voltage DC electricity between them, ensuring the safety of the PV system and maintenance personnel. The rapid shutdown device developed by NEP is one of the few products globally that possesses core patents for such devices. The product offers high safety, complying with US safety standards NEC690-2017/2020. Its unique bidirectional communication function enables module-level fault monitoring and diagnosis, automatic high-temperature warnings, and compatibility with various communication protocol devices, offering both cost-effectiveness and high safety. To meet more user demands, NEP has updated and improved its RSD products, with a maximum input current of up to 20A and a metal casing, further enhancing safety.
